Billing Authorities (local councils), send out hundreds of thousands of initial and revised business rates demands every year. It’s big business for the government, bringing in around £26 billion every year. In the UK it raises as much as Council Tax, with receipts being equivalent to more than half of corporation tax revenue.
Accurates works with the complex regulations governing the calculation, billing, collection and enforcement of rate liabilities. Equally so, the legislation for the compilation and alteration of rating valuation lists. We monitor the continual changes that are made to both.

Our expertise is in understanding the locally defined administrative frameworks, within which both interact on a day to day basis. We forensically identify inaccurate calculations and non-compliance that can lead to overcharges, often over a number of years, and which can be enormous.

We know from experience that it may not be deliberate but the effect is the same. Money goes missing. Consequently, we continually use the processes below to ensure our clients get their overpayments back.

  • Identification of potential for reduced business rate charges via the examination of ‘virtual’ demand notices produced using our rate liability calculator programmes;
  • Selection of most appropriate and effective methods for securing the maximum rebate for clients, both retrospectively and going forward;
  • Preparation, submission and monitoring of detailed compliance and audit claims to billing authorities by Institute of Revenues, Rating and Valuation qualified former local authority revenues officers;
  • Negotiation of claims with billing authorities, including any responses to Revenues Officers’ queries;
  • Ensuring local interpretations, judgements, determinations and systems meet legal and administrative requirements.
