Temporary reoccupation relief
In England, the government introduced a temporary reoccupation relief, granting a 50% discount from business rates for new occupants of previously empty retail premises for 18 months, to help reduce the number of boarded up shops on high streets. The relief will be granted to businesses moving into long-term empty retail properties on or after 1 April 2014 and on or before 31 March 2016.
In Scotland, the ‘Fresh Start’ initiative provides a 50% rates discount for the first year of occupation of some previously empty shops, offices, pubs, hotels or restaurants with an RV of below £65,000 (increased from £45,000 in 2013/2014). In addition, some empty new build properties will qualify.
